Research and Travel Scholarships

The 2024 competition is now close.

CCSR established a scholarship to encourage the training of new generations of religious scholars in honour of its fortieth anniversary in 2010. The scholarship aims to enable doctoral students who are well into their dissertations, as well as unemployed graduates or university teachers in the field of Religious Studies who are in a precarious position, to travel in order to conduct research (for example, to consult archives, the collections of certain libraries, or research centers, as well as to work in the field).

CCSR customarily allocates a maximum amount of $7,500 CAN to be distributed among the successful applicants, according to the decision of the Travel Bursary Committee of the CCSR. Recipients of Research Travel Scholarships and the respective award amounts will be announced at the annual Board meeting in January.

The scholarships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and students on a study permit studying in Canada. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be a member of one of the constituent societies of the CCSR and either:

a) enrolled in a doctoral program and be studying an aspect of religious studies or theology, has successfully completed the comprehensive or major/minor field examinations and their thesis proposal has been approved by their department or doctoral committee.

b) has completed an earned PhD in the field of religious studies or theology and has no academic post, or only a course-by-course session contract.
